The
Duck has a long tradition of live entertainment ranging from country to
rock. Since Jack Kizera took over the establishment in 2005, his focus
has not only been to retain its friendly atmosphere and traditional
menu, but broadening and raising the level of the bar’s entertainment.
Himself a musician, Jack has brought in many excellent regional bands
including the Glenn Gratto Band, The Horns From Hell, James
Doolin and the Mob, and St. Catharines country icon, Marty Allen,
to name a few.
More
recently, under the motto “
Niagara’s Premier Blues Destination”, Jack has integrated a strong
blues presence into The Duck's usual entertainment lineup. Starting in
September 2007, in collaboration with local blues guitarist Dave Curry, Jack introduced the Saturday matinee blues
sessions. Thanks to Curry – considered one of the premier blues
guitarists in the country – and his fellow bandmates Jim Casson,
“Canada” Dave Torosian, and Gary Kendall of Downchild Blues Band
fame, The Duck’s motto is no idle boast or advertising gimmick. People
are already coming to the venue from as far away as
Port Colborne,
Fort Erie,
Hamilton
and Brantford
to hear their favourite blues artists.
As
The Duck’s Saturday afternoon house band, collectively known as The Mighty Duck Blues
Band, Curry, Casson, Torosian, and Kendall have backed many of
Canada’s blues elite at the Saturday matinee sessions. Among the many guest
artists who have ventured from
Toronto, Southwestern Ontario, and even from
Buffalo,
N.Y.
are legendary performers like Chuck Jackson, Jack de Keyzer,
Steve Strongman, Mike Branton, David Rotundo, Cheryl
Lescom, Krista Blondin, Diana Braithwaite & Chris
Whiteley, Jack Civiletto, Mark “Bird” Stafford, and Johnny Max.
In
addition to the blues matinees, The Duck has live entertainment on
Friday and Saturday nights featuring various styles of music.
